Smart Homes and Tech where will it lead?

Alexa please turn on the lights, Alexa please turn off the big TV, Alexa please turn down the temperature, Alexa announce dinners ready…. These are just a few of the things that my family now says on a daily basis, it has now got to the stage where my two year old is saying Alexa play baby Shark or Alexa please play Daisy Daisy. Smart Home technology is now in our homes and it’s here to stay with tech firms having a price war to get these devices into our everyday lives.

Google Home vs Amazon Echo

I notice my self on a daily basis not utilising smart technology, it tells me to get up and gives me a tap on the wrist to say you are being inactive. A good thing but the technology is now starting to influence us in so many ways, changing our habbits, sending us reminders, highlighting mail and updates from social media – all are being filtered through algorithms that decide what you see and influence your decisions.

Personally, I like to embrace change and all the processes and efficiencies that these new technologies can help us with. Not installing all this Smart Tech straight away, but with consideration and judgement picking what is the most beneficial and in most cases will actually save me money, regulated thermostats and leak detectors, smart plugs for instance to name but a few.

Now onto privacy, are we happy for these huge multi national firms being able to listen into everything that we say, possibly learning what we want to buy, what we want to do and are demographics and preferences. Do we really know how our information is being used? and how it influences our choices? Looking to the future will these technologies be so heavily embedded in our lives that they start to take control?

Lets hope that they take care of our data and don’t use it against us, hopefully moral and ethical issues don’t arise but they may and governments around the world need to have a serious look at legislation to ensure we all stay protected and are rights are not infringed.

On the whole I think these technologies will be a positive and take us forward, combining AR, AI and Machine Learning into our everyday lives from work to the home will hopefully be beneficial to mankind.

I will be featuring some of my favourite smart home tech in the coming weeks – subscribe today to keep updated.
