Going into the HD re-release of Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation on the PS4, I decided to keep an open mind considering I had never played the game before, and the original version came out way back in 2012 on the relatively low-powered PlayStation Vitahandheld. Despite this, Liberation’s poor mission design, weirdly finicky controls, and presentational issues left quite a poor overall impression on me.
One of the most fascinating elements of Liberation is Aveline, the first female protagonist in the Assassin’s Creed series, and the way you can alternate between three different outfits. You can run, climb around New Orleans, and stab enemies as an assassin, but you can also charm guards as a well-dressed lady, or sneak your way into camps as a slave. But these interesting concepts are squandered quite often as Liberation’s mission design is straight-up bad.
